Requirements:

Illinois requires that all businesses with one or more part-time or full-time employees must buy Illinois workers compensation insurance.

 

Sole-Proprietors, Partners, and LLC Members are automatically excluded from work comp coverage. They may elect to be included for coverage on a policy.

Sole-Proprietors, Partners and LLC Members who include themselves on workers compensation coverage must use a minimum payroll amount of $55,700 as of January 1, 2017

 

Corporate Officers are automatically included on a policy, but they may choose to be excluded on the work comp policy.

Corp Officers who are not excluded from coverage must utilize a minimum payroll of $54,600 and a maximum payroll of $223,600 for the purpose of rating workers comp premium. (As of 1/1/2017)

 

Owners of high risk companies (i.e. truckers, roofers, etc) are automatically included on all Illinois workers compensation insurance polices regardless of entity type, but may elect to exclude themselves from coverage.
